The D1 Cup Series championship battle has taken a dramatic turn following Race 6, as Corey Heim captured the victory in his No. 67 Toyota and overtook Connor Zilisch for the championship lead.
After finishing seventh at Texas in Race 5, Heim bounced back with an impressive victory, securing valuable championship points and moving into first place in the driver standings. The result comes just one race after Zilisch celebrated his historic 50th career victory, creating an intense battle between two of the series' leading competitors.
Lando Norris delivered a strong performance in the No. 13, finishing second and strengthening his championship position. Brent Crews continued his impressive consistency with a third-place finish, following his runner-up result at Texas.
Brennan Poole recorded an excellent fourth-place finish in the No. 6 Ford, marking a major improvement after finishing 13th in Race 5. Philip Shapka completed the top five in the No. 8 Chevrolet, continuing his steady climb through the championship standings.
Meanwhile, Connor Zilisch finished sixth in the No. 48 Chevrolet. Although he recorded another solid result, it was not enough to maintain his championship lead. Rajah Caruth finished seventh, followed by Jack Elkowitz in eighth, Luke Fenhaus in ninth, and Carson Kvapil in tenth.
Further down the field, Max Verstappen finished 11th, while former Bristol winner Cleetus McFarland crossed the line in 12th. Kingston Galo finished 13th, and Brexton Busch endured a difficult race, finishing 14th after placing third at Texas the previous race.
The biggest story, however, is the championship shake-up.
Corey Heim now leads the standings with 83 points, holding an incredibly narrow one-point advantage over Connor Zilisch, who sits second with 82 points.
Lando Norris remains third with 72 points, just 11 behind Heim. Brent Crews occupies fourth with 70 points, while Jack Elkowitz completes the championship top five with 63 points.
Rajah Caruth remains sixth with 61 points, while Philip Shapka moves up to seventh with 57. Cleetus McFarland falls to eighth with 53 points, and Brennan Poole climbs two positions to ninth with 46. Brexton Busch rounds out the top ten with 41 points.
The championship's latest developments highlight just how competitive this season has become. Zilisch appeared to have established a strong advantage after Texas, leading Heim by 14 points. However, in just one race, Heim erased that deficit and turned it into a one-point championship lead.
For Heim and Toyota Super Motorsports, the victory represents a significant achievement and provides valuable momentum heading into the next round. For Zilisch, the challenge will be reclaiming the lead after holding the top position following Race 5.
With six races completed, the championship remains wide open. Heim and Zilisch are separated by the smallest possible points margin, while Norris and Crews remain within striking distance.
As the D1 Cup Series prepares for Race 7, the pressure continues to build. Will Corey Heim extend his championship advantage, or will Connor Zilisch fight back and reclaim the top spot?
