LANDO NORRIS WINS HIS SECOND OF THE SEASON
By Jack Elkowitz · · Community submission
Lando Norris returned to Victory Lane in Race 8 of the D1 Cup Series season, capturing his second career win with a strong performance in the No. 13 Ford. Norris led the field to the checkered flag ahead of Brent Crews and Carson Kvapil, giving himself a major boost in the championship fight.
The victory was an important one for Norris, who entered the race second in the standings and looking to cut into Corey Heim’s points lead. He did exactly that, earning the win while Heim finished sixth, trimming the championship gap to just six points.
Brent Crews continued his impressive season by finishing second, while Carson Kvapil delivered one of his strongest runs of the year in third. Philip Shapka followed with another solid result in fourth, and Jack Elkowitz completed the top five in fifth place.
Championship leader Corey Heim brought the No. 67 home in sixth, limiting the damage on a day when one of his biggest rivals went to Victory Lane. Max Verstappen finished seventh, Luke Fenhaus came home eighth, and Rajah Caruth and Brexton Busch rounded out the top ten.
Further back, Brennan Poole finished 11th, Connor Zilisch came home 12th, Cleetus McFarland ended up 13th, and Kingston Galo finished 14th.
Norris Gains Ground, but Heim Still Leads
Even though Norris scored the win, Corey Heim remains on top of the championship standings after eight races. Heim now has 119 points, while Norris has climbed to 113, cutting the deficit to only six points.
Brent Crews moved up to third in the standings with 96 points, passing Connor Zilisch, who dropped to fourth with 87 after a difficult 12th-place result. Jack Elkowitz remains fifth with 86 points, just one point behind Zilisch.
Philip Shapka moved up to sixth in the standings with 82 points, while Rajah Caruth dropped to seventh with 78. Cleetus McFarland stays eighth with 59 points.
The battle just outside the top eight is also getting tighter. Max Verstappen jumped two positions to ninth with 56 points, tying Brennan Poole on points but moving ahead in the order shown. Brexton Busch sits 11th with 55, while Luke Fenhaus is 12th with 50.
Carson Kvapil’s podium moved him up to 13th with 43 points, while Kingston Galo dropped to 14th with 34.
A Huge Race in the Championship Battle
Race 8 was a big turning point for the standings. Norris not only collected his second career win, but also made up valuable ground on Heim in the title fight.
At Watkins Glen, Heim had stretched his lead to 22 points over Norris. Just one race later, that advantage has been cut down to only six.
That means the championship picture is much tighter again heading into the next round.
**Zilisch Loses More Ground**
One of the biggest stories from Race 8 was another difficult result for Connor Zilisch. Just a few races ago, Zilisch looked firmly in control of the championship after earning his historic 50th career victory at Texas.
Since then, the momentum has shifted dramatically.
Zilisch finished 13th at Watkins Glen and followed that up with 12th in Race 8, dropping from third to fourth in the standings and falling **32 points behind Heim**.
Meanwhile, Heim continues to lead through consistency, and Norris has emerged as his biggest challenger after picking up this latest victory.
Momentum Building for Norris
With his second career win now secured, Norris has officially become one of the biggest threats in the championship battle. The No. 13 Ford has shown speed, consistency, and the ability to capitalize when it matters most.
Heim still controls the standings, but Norris has made it clear that the fight for the championship is far from over.
As the D1 Cup Series heads to Race 9, the spotlight will be on the battle between Heim and Norris, with Brent Crews, Connor Zilisch, Jack Elkowitz, and Philip Shapka all still trying to stay in the mix.
