COREY HEIM GOES BACK TO BACK
By Jack Elkowitz · · Community submission
Corey Heim continued his impressive run in the D1 Cup Series, capturing his second consecutive victory at Watkins Glen International in Race 7 of the season. Driving the No. 67 Toyota for Toyota Super Motorsports, Heim followed up his Atlanta victory with another outstanding performance, extending his championship lead to 22 points over Lando Norris.
The victory marks another important moment in Heim's championship campaign as he begins to separate himself from the competition. Just two races ago, Connor Zilisch held a 14-point advantage following his historic 50th career victory at Texas. Now, after consecutive wins by Heim, the championship picture has changed dramatically.
**Heim Dominates the Headlines at Watkins Glen**
Heim secured the victory at the iconic New York road course, finishing ahead of Lando Norris in the No. 13, who recorded his second consecutive runner-up finish.
Norris continues to demonstrate impressive consistency, having finished second at both Atlanta and Watkins Glen. His performance moved him into second place in the championship standings, making him Heim's closest challenger.
Philip Shapka delivered one of his strongest results of the season, bringing the No. 8 Chevrolet home in third place. The podium finish earned Shapka valuable championship points and helped him remain competitive in the standings.
Jack Elkowitz followed in fourth aboard the No. 17 Chevrolet, recording an important top-five finish that strengthened his position in the championship standings.
Brent Crews completed the top five in the No. 54, continuing his consistent run near the front of the field.
Rajah Caruth finished sixth, followed by Max Verstappen in seventh and Brexton Busch in eighth. Kingston Galo secured ninth, while Brennan Poole rounded out the top ten.
**Connor Zilisch Suffers Disastrous Race**
Perhaps the biggest surprise of Race 7 was Connor Zilisch's difficult afternoon.
After winning his 50th career race at Texas just two rounds earlier, Zilisch entered Watkins Glen sitting second in the championship standings, only one point behind Heim.
However, the No. 48 Chevrolet struggled to produce a competitive result, with Zilisch finishing a disappointing 13th out of 14 drivers.
The finish earned Zilisch just two additional championship points, increasing his season total from 82 to 84.
Meanwhile, Heim's victory moved him from 83 to 109 points, creating a massive 25-point gap between the two drivers in just one race.
Zilisch also dropped from second to third in the championship standings, surrendering his position to Lando Norris.
The result represents a significant setback for the No. 48 team, which had appeared to be in control of the championship following its milestone victory at Texas.
**Championship Standings: Heim Extends His Advantage**
Following seven races, Corey Heim leads the championship with 109 points, establishing his largest advantage of the season.
Lando Norris has climbed into second with 87 points, trailing Heim by 22. Connor Zilisch sits third with 84 points, while Brent Crews remains fourth with 81.
Jack Elkowitz rounds out the championship top five with 75 points, placing him 34 points behind Heim.
Rajah Caruth occupies sixth with 71 points, just one ahead of Philip Shapka, who sits seventh with 70.
Cleetus McFarland remains eighth with 57 points, followed by Brennan Poole in ninth with 52 and Brexton Busch in tenth with 49.
Further down the standings, Max Verstappen moved ahead of Luke Fenhaus into 11th, while Kingston Galo climbed to 13th following his ninth-place result.
**A Remarkable Championship Turnaround**
The last three races have completely transformed the championship battle.
At Texas, Connor Zilisch celebrated his 50th career victory and held a comfortable 14-point advantage over Corey Heim.
At Atlanta, Heim captured the victory and overturned that deficit, taking the championship lead by a single point.
Now, following Watkins Glen, Heim has extended his lead to 22 points over his nearest competitor.
In just two races, the championship has shifted from Zilisch leading Heim by 14 points to Heim leading Zilisch by 25.
Meanwhile, Norris has emerged as a serious championship contender through consistent performances. His consecutive second-place finishes have pushed him ahead of Zilisch and into the runner-up position.
**Can Anyone Stop Corey Heim?**
With back-to-back victories at Atlanta and Watkins Glen, Heim has firmly established himself as the driver to beat.
The No. 67 Toyota has delivered when it matters most, while several championship rivals have struggled to match Heim's recent results.
However, with plenty of racing still ahead, the championship is far from over.
Norris continues to close in on the front of the standings, while Zilisch will be determined to recover from his disappointing Watkins Glen performance.
Brent Crews, Jack Elkowitz, Rajah Caruth, and Philip Shapka also remain locked in a competitive fight for championship positions.
As the D1 Cup Series prepares for Race 8, the biggest question is whether Corey Heim can extend his winning streak to three consecutive races or whether one of his championship rivals can finally bring his momentum to an end.
