The 2011 Kobalt Tools 500 took place on November 13, 2011, as the penultimate race of the 2011 NASCAR Cup Series season and the ninth leg in the 10-race Chase for the Cup. Hosted at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona, the 312-lap event was the very first Sprint Cup race run on the track's freshly repaved surface and newly reconfigured layout. Matt Kenseth started on the pole, while the championship battle took center stage with title contenders Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart starting ninth and eighth, respectively.
